Criminalizing Immigration

1/28/17 – As part of two new executive orders issued by President Donald Trump, immigration agents will now have wider latitude to enforce federal laws and are being encouraged to deport broad swaths of unauthorized immigrants, regardless of whether they have been charged with a crime. This reflects what a prominent sociologist recently described in Issues as an emerging national pattern of commingling efforts to deal with crime and immigration, adding that the shift “does not reflect our basic values.”
